First leg of the European Cup semifinal between Bayern Munich and Real Madrid.
The match was already heated when Matthäus made a tough tackle on Chendo. Chendo got up and pushed Matthäus, and immediately afterward, Juanito, beside himself, took justice into his own hands and stomped on the German player twice, once on the back and once on the head. The referee, who was in front, instantly expelled the Madrid player.
What the referee did not see was the other stomp, the one by Sanchís (more subtle, but a stomp nonetheless).
The sanction was as severe as one might expect: 5 years without being able to participate in European competitions.
Nonetheless, it must be said in favor of Juanito that he regretted his actions right after the match ended, and days later, he presented Matthäus with a bullfighter's cape and sword as a form of apology.
